Questions to ask before switching your mobile plan

Comparing mobile plans is easier when you know what to ask. This guide lists practical questions to think through, so you can weigh up options for yourself. It does not recommend any particular plan or provider — every decision stays with you.

What do you actually use?

Mobile plans are usually built around an allowance of data, minutes, and texts. A useful starting point is to look at what you typically use in a month rather than what a plan offers in theory.

Most providers show your recent usage in their app or account area. Knowing your real usage makes it easier to judge whether a given allowance is more or less than you need.

  • How much mobile data you use in a typical month.
  • Whether you regularly use calls and texts, or mostly messaging apps over data.
  • Whether your usage changes seasonally — for example, more data when travelling.

Are you in or out of contract?

If you are still within a minimum term, leaving early can involve a charge. Checking whether you are in or out of contract — and when any minimum term ends — tells you whether you are free to change without a fee.

Your provider’s app or account area, or a recent bill, usually shows your contract status and end date.

SIM-only or a handset plan?

Mobile plans broadly split into SIM-only plans (just the airtime, used with a phone you already own) and plans that include a handset paid off over the contract.

If a plan includes a handset, it can help to understand how much of the monthly cost is the airtime and how much is paying for the phone, and what happens to the cost once the phone is paid off.

Coverage and network

Coverage varies by network and by location. It is worth checking the coverage where you live, work, and travel most, rather than relying on a general impression of a network.

Networks and regulators publish coverage checkers that let you look up a postcode. Some plans run on another network’s infrastructure, so it can help to know which underlying network a plan uses.

What is included beyond the allowance?

Plans differ in what they bundle alongside data, minutes, and texts. Checking these extras helps you compare plans on more than headline allowance alone.

  • Roaming — whether, where, and how you can use your allowance abroad.
  • Added perks such as data that does not count against your allowance for certain apps.
  • Whether the allowance or price changes after an introductory period.

Keeping your number and leaving

If you move to a new provider, you can usually keep your existing phone number rather than starting with a new one. The process for transferring a number, and any notice your current provider needs, are worth understanding before you change.

Your current provider can explain how to request the transfer and what timescales apply.
